The composting chamber is sized to serve two to four full-time users with continuous composting capacity that processes waste at the rate it is deposited without requiring periodic emptying more than two to four times per year under full-time use conditions. The electric fan operates continuously at four watts drawing air from the bathroom through the toilet bowl and exhausting it through a 2-inch vent pipe to the exterior preventing any odor from escaping into the living space. The vent pipe creates a negative pressure in the composting chamber that is the primary odor control mechanism – maintaining the interior of the composting chamber below atmospheric pressure at all times so that odor-bearing air flows toward the chamber rather than toward the bathroom. A mixing handle turns the composting material in the drum to introduce oxygen that accelerates aerobic decomposition and prevents the anaerobic conditions that produce hydrogen sulfide odor. The heating element in the chamber floor operates thermostatically to maintain the composting mass at 60 to 70 degrees Celsius – the optimal temperature range for pathogen reduction and rapid decomposition of organic material. The finished compost is a dry odorless stable material that can be handled safely and disposed of as garden compost in most jurisdictions. The toilet operates on 110V AC power or can be powered by a 12V DC solar system with the included voltage converter.
